Gonzales, The Firewall

If Gonzales is gone, impeachment gets one GIANT step closer to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or the Naval Observatory - depending which strategy you go with. I think Rove knows Bush's ratings be damned, they can't loose Gonzales. Do we think Myers has really that much to say? Maybe. But the longer Rove, et al, prolongs the Congress' misery and investigation, the closer they get to Bush's last day in office - a few more than 500 days are left to go. They just need to hold on and hanging on means not letting Myers testify or Gonzales or any of the other of the king's menagerie. The secondary firewall may be the surge. I wonder these days if the September Report will come back de facto positive in an attempt to split the blue dog Democrats off from the progressives and weaken the party as a whole? Either way, the Summer will wind down, the blood bath in Iraq will worsen, the housing market will still be in freefall and the headlines for the Wall Street Journal will proclaim it is another sunny, beautiful day and all is well in America.

Up all night to do what's right

There's a front page post at Buckeye State Blog entitled Up all night to do what's right. We couldn't resist... You can watch the proceedings on C-SPAN. And it would probably be a good idea to keep an eye on Media Matters for any bias in the media coverage that alert citizens should respond to.

Who will step up?

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane & My Left Wing click to enlarge The list of do-nothing Democrats gets longer and longer every day we are in Iraq. In 2006, Americans sent a powerful message with their vote to end the war in Iraq. Now that the Democrats are in control of both halves of Congress, we are still in Iraq. We will be in Iraq for the foreseeable future. Bush has even said it will be his predecessor that brings the troops home. He has also embraced a “South Korea” scenario where we NEVER leave Iraq. Since the 2006 election, even MORE Americans see the Iraq invasion as a horrible mistake and want our troops brought home and support such legislation. Still, we remain in Iraq. We don’t even have a withdrawal plan and this shouldn’t be surprising. We had no plan going into Iraq, why should we expect BushCo to have one for coming OUT. It is time to STOP enabling Democrats and START making them vote for US, not their corporate contributors. The people of the 11th District may have voted to put Shuler in Congress, but it was a national effort of progressive bloggers and small donations from all over the country that paid for the ads, the mailers - the whole campaign. But Congressmen like Shuler should be made aware of just how tenuous their hold of their Congressional seat is. If he keeps voting the same way as Elizabeth Dole, I will do all I can to support his challengers in the 2008 Primaries. In fact, any Democrat that keeps a voting record akin to Elizabeth Dole’s needs to be replaced. My question to you is, who will step up?

What have the Republicans accomplished?

click to enlarge Let's all put on our non-partisan hats today and try to come up with a list of the positive things the Republicans have accomplished in the last 20 years. Come on, you can do this. I will barely hurt. I'll wait. Take your time. Nothing? Me neither and I slept in my damn hat.

Liddy Come Home! (NC-Sen)

click to enlarge Why us? Why is North Carolina saddled with such a useless and inactive Senator as Elizabeth Dole? She is ranked as one of the "10 Worst Senators" by Empowering Veterans and the real question of her residence always comes into play. Her husband, Bob Dole is a resident of Kansas and they are still married. So how is it she is a resident of NC? How many other couples do you know that have residencies to two separate states? NC deserves better.

Republicans depend on good intelligence.

click to enlarge Inhofe is a sterling example of what the GOP is, stupid, willfully ignorant and whiny. Yesterday's confrontation between Gore and Inhofe shows clearly who the adults are in the room. From our friends at Grist: First, he spent the beginning of the hearing whining about the rules, and whether Gore submitted his testimony in time, and whether he was going to get his full 15 minutes, and whether if Gore's answers were too long he'd get time added, and etc. etc. Then when time came to question Gore, he started by demanding yes-or-no answers to charged and misleading questions. He repeatedly cut Gore off and talked over him. At one point he demanded that Gore respond in writing! Then he said verbal responses are OK if they're "brief." When Boxer tried to intervene to give Gore a little time to answer, he snapped and her and whined about not getting his full time. Then -- the hacktacular coup de grace -- he asked Gore to sign a pledge to reduce his personal home energy use to that of an average American. As gimmicks go, this one would embarrass a high school student, but Inhofe's band of knuckle-draggers seems quite pleased with themselves. I'm sure there were frat boy back slaps all around. But every time Gore tried to respond, Inhofe cut him off - typical of those who are unwilling to listen. They are only concerned with their agendas and have no care about America or its future. When the bulk of Gore's message is that we are in a "true planetary emergency" one would hope all Senators would ask more poignant questions besides ones dealing Gore's electric bill.
